Modalities are temporal, and together they encompass a complete cycle. The wheel of existence can be seen through modalities: beginning, middle, end -  birth, life, and death - starting, persisting, finishing. Each modality contains one sign from each element. While the elements describe the temperament of the signs, the modalities describe the behaviors of the zodiac. All are equal and all are needed. 

Cardinal: Initiators, leaders, start/kick off new ideas and new activities. Strong activation energy but can lack endurance. Excitable doers who are brave and bold; often unapologetically. Cardinal signs are those that start the seasons. Aries starts spring, Cancer starts summer, Libra starts fall and Capricorn starts winter.

Fixed: They hold the line. They persist with endurance, strength, strong work ethic, reliability. Stubborn, faithful and dislike change. They move with their heart and deeply commit. Fixed signs are those in the heart of the season where we are immersed. Taurus in spring, Leo in summer, Scorpio in fall and Aquarius in winter.

Mutable: Highly adaptable, embracing change and going with the flow. Resourceful. Slightly restless. Very comfortable with transition and moving from one phase to the next; fluid. Mutable signs come at the end of each season and prepare us for transition into the next. Gemini marks the end of spring, Virgo marks the end of summer, Sagittarius marks the end of fall, and Pisces marks the end of winter.
