There are four elements that govern life on earth and embody all that we see. Fire, Earth, Air, and Water are all around us and affect us every day, sometimes obviously and sometimes more subtly. Each zodiac sign is ruled by one of the four elements, with three signs ruled by each. The elements all have unique characteristics and imbue the signs they rule with their signature qualities. Knowing which element a sign is governed by can provide deep insight into that sign's temperament and thought processes.

While not an exhaustive list, here are key aspects of each element to help you formulate an impression of each. You’ll see each has its light and shadow side, and no one is better than the other. 

 

air: Represents the mind and thoughts. Thinkers, ideators, analyzers, liberators, detached, intellectual, investigative.

earth: Represents body and material things. Builders, rooted, hardworking, doers, stable, stubborn, pragmatic, practical, reliable.    

                     

fire: Represents energy and action. Passionate, dynamic, temperamental, warming, creative, energetic, playful.

water: Represents feeling and intuition. Emotional, caring, intuitive, moody, sensitive, deep, empathetic, understanding.
